A Safe Way to Sell or Buy a Car over the Internet

The Internet is a great place to offer your car for sale.  Expansive sites like Autotrader.com, Edmunds.com, Vehix.com and ebaymotors.com make it easy to show photos of your vehicle and attract the interest of potential buyers.

But uh-oh, the downside:  It can be pretty scary showing your car from your home - strangers coming out to your house at night; meeting tire-kickers off-site, or waiting for no-shows by yourself.

Trade-in’s offer less money

Unfortunately, trading-in your car isn’t the answer either.  By trading-in your car you typically lose $2,000 to $6,000, cash - right off the top!  This is the difference between what you receive for your trade-in and what the dealer will retail your car for.  You can easily see what this exact figure is by looking-up your car model online on any of the car sites.

    Is there an answer?  Maybe.
The start-up business, Philadelphia’s own Autoxxchange offers the opportunity for you to sell your car in the safety of a busy shopping center along with other private owners… and buyers.

When: Sunday, May 23 - 10am to 4pm.
Where: Bala-Cynwyd Shopping Center.
      Route 1, City Ave
One mile south off the Expressway, at the City Ave. exit
Call: 610-642-1000 for information
Pre-register to show your car at Autoxxchange.com
Day-of: Just drive in! Drive-in’s welcome!

Local guy Jeff Dobkin heads the effort. “When privately selling your vehicle the payoff is grand… in fact several grand.  You typically receive $2,000 to $6,000 more money than you’d get from a dealer.  Great pay for one day’s work: privately selling your car in the safety of a busy shopping center.

Dobkin leased-out the front section (on City avenue) of the Bala-Cynwyd Shopping Center for the day, and offers it to private sellers to show and sell their car in a safe environment.

The cost is reasonably $29.95 ($5 off for pre-registering).  Dobkin and his team don't sell your car or negotiate for you - you’re on your own there; but he does offer some booklets on pricing strategies.  He also doesn’t charge anything extra if you sell your car, nothing, nada!  He simply provides a safe place to show your car with other sellers, and buyers.  There will be some additional independent experts on hand: Insurance people, financial people, and auto-tag personnel to help you.  These are independent people and Dobkin doesn't add anything to their service costs - he simply feels it's an added premium service to his customers.

Sellers Savings are real.  $2,000 to $6,000

Autoxxchange takes direct aim at the dealer’s slice of the trade-in profits, which is usually a pretty healthy clip, and allows the vehicle owners to keep that amount.  Not to say dealers don’t deserve their mark-up, they are entitled to make money on any part of a sale as they see fit.  But to help private sellers keep the $2,000 to $6,000 spread, Autoxxchange may have a justifiable place in the market.

“It’s a safe addition to everyone who offers their car on the Internet,” Dobkin says.  “When it comes down to showing your vehicle in person we offer a safe place with lots of people around - other private sellers and buyers.”

Buyers benefit, too.

Turns out buyers purchasing a car also profit by Autoxxchange events.  Besides the safety factor, (big in the Philadelphia area after the robbery of a car buyer last month in South Philly made the evening news) car buyers can negotiate for a part or all of the $2,000 to $6,000 spread.  Purchasers can also ask questions about the car directly to the owner, request service records, and get a feel for how the car was cared for — something you don’t always get from a dealer, whose sole goal is to pay as little for a trade-in as possible, and sell it for as much money as they can possibly get.

If you’re thinking about selling or trading your car in, before doing anything, see for yourself what your car is worth as both a trade-in and at the dealer retail: look it up on the Internet on any of the pricing sites online:  Kelly Blue Book, NADA, and Edmunds.

Support a local entrepreneur, and get the chance to clear an additional $2,000 to $6,000 when selling your car by showing it safely at this event.
